Chips&Media said its next-generation WAVE6331X FuSa video codec hardware IP has officially achieved ISO 26262 ASIL-B certification from DNV, the independent global certification body, on Sept. 30, 2026. The company said the result came after more than two years of intensive research and development investment.
For developers building automotive chips, the immediate significance is that Chips&Media is offering the codec as a certified safety package rather than only as a standalone IP block. The company said this SEooC, or safety element out of context, package includes a safety manual and is meant to support system-on-chip integration, verification and safety assessment at the chip level.
Chips&Media said the target use cases include advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, and in-vehicle infotainment, or IVI. It said the WAVE6331X FuSa is designed to detect relevant anomalies when internal hardware faults or data corruption occur, and to support a transition of the system into a safe state within the defined fault response time.
The company also said the architecture integrates safety mechanisms such as real-time CRC protection and instruction flow monitoring to support the ASIL-B safety target under the defined assumptions of use, while aiming to keep hardware area and power penalties low. Chips&Media said it has expanded the same functional safety development approach to AVC, HEVC, AV1 and VP9 codec IPs, and is preparing to apply it to AV2 and VVC.
In a quote, CEO Steve Kim said: “Achieving the ISO 26262 ASIL-B certification proves that Chips&Media's functional safety design capabilities are world-class, marking our official evolution from a multimedia IP provider into a global automotive safety leader.” He added that the company's video codec IP is adopted by three of the world's top five automotive chipmakers.
