The European Union said it has been a constant supporter of the International Criminal Court, or ICC, and called it deeply regrettable that the United States has announced intentions to impose sanctions. The statement came on 9 October 2026.

The EU said it will work closely with the ICC so the court can continue to operate effectively. It also said it remains committed to working with all 125 states that are parties to the Rome Statute to preserve and respect the court's independence, so it can continue what it described as its vital mission.

The bloc said there is a six-month delay before the measures become applicable, leaving room for dialogue. It added that it stands ready to take any necessary measures to help the court carry out its work in investigating and prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The EU also said it is prepared to protect the interests of EU operators within the Single Market.
