How we assess brokers
The score and the verified facts on this page come from traderpublic's research-hub record, with the date of each check shown beside it. Where a real field has not shipped yet, the section renders labelled template placeholders instead — never an unlabelled guess.

General example — not Merrill Edge's dataHow to read a broker's safety information
- Checking a licence
- Search for the company in the public register on the regulator's own website, and check that the company name, licence number and website match what the broker shows.
- Segregated client funds
- Client money is held in accounts separate from the company's own money, so it is not used to run the business.
- Negative balance protection
- Protection that stops an account balance going below zero after a sharp price move, so a trader cannot lose more than they deposited.
- Investor compensation scheme
- A fund in some jurisdictions that pays clients back, up to a set limit, if a licensed firm fails and cannot return their money.

Frequently asked questions
Our desk has not checked this section yet. Real figures, with their source, replace these once it has.
General example — not Merrill Edge's dataGeneral questions about choosing and using a broker
What does a licence from a regulator mean, and how can I check it?
It means a financial regulator has authorised the firm to offer its services in that regulator's jurisdiction, and the firm has to follow the regulator's rules. To check, search for the firm's name or licence number in the public register on the regulator's own website, and make sure the company name, website domain and licence status all match.
What is the difference between a spread and a commission?
The spread is the gap between the buy and the sell price, a cost built into the price every time you open a position. A commission is a separate fee charged per trade. Some accounts charge only a spread, others a narrower spread plus a commission, so compare the total of both.
What is a demo account for?
A demo account uses virtual money, so you can learn a platform and try out a way of trading without risking real funds. Results can differ from a live account, where slippage, liquidity and emotions come into play.
What should I check before depositing money?
Check the licence on the regulator's register, read the terms for deposit, withdrawal and inactivity fees, find out whether client money is kept separate from the firm's own funds, and keep in mind that leveraged trading can lose money quickly.
How are withdrawals usually verified?
Brokers usually send a withdrawal back to the method used to deposit, into an account in the trading account holder's own name, and may ask for identity documents or proof that the card or bank account is yours before approving it. How long it takes depends on the method and each broker's terms.
